    • Description:

Another day for another post and almost another victory. After totally missed indianapolis, and doing a lot of mistake in the first race i made yesterday on lime rock with the skip.

I feel like i have to try again and hope i would make a result. After a start at the second place. I was on attack, but unfortunately, a lapper made me loose a lot of time. I had to go on harder, and was time from time reducing the gap between me and the first, alejandro. But unfortunately for him, he made a mistake at 15 lap from the goal.

I was now first, i continued to attack for almost five lap; and as i was ten second before the second. I have made a end of race very slow.

So here it is, last season it was my first win ever, and it was in late model from oval. Now i am really proud to have made my first victory one a road track.

      and this week it's brandy!!!

  • The Wheel and Lime Rock arrive The Wheel and Lime Rock arrive....

    • From: Robert Mahoney
    • Description:

Awesome the UPS man bring my wheel by in the afternoon and I get it all setup. Since the Solstice is moving to Lime Rock that evening I decide to test there while I am working on fine tuning my wheel to suit me. Setting up my G27 went pretty smooth. I had already been reading the forums and I had a good idea what everything needed to be set at. All in all i had my wheel pretty much in sync with me within about 20 mins.

I then decide to work on getting my speed up at Lime Rock. All I had been doing was puttering around the track to make sure I liked the wheel settings up to this point. I run a good number of laps and have what I feel is a nice smooth line that does decent time. So then I go check out the forums again to see what people are saying about a good time for Lime Rock. Yep what i thought was a good time was not all that good...go figure. I then found a few replays of people at the track to watch their line and watch their shift points. I figured out shift points was hurting my time a ton. So back to the track I go.

Now did I mention that for a good time at Lime rock in this Solstice you apparently need to be good at drifting? That is what i feels like anyway lol. So a drifting we will go. That night I was able to get into 3 races. Finished toward the front in all of them and actually lead for for about 7 laps. I finished 2nd in that one. Now to do some more time trial and hopefully get out of this Solstice. I do not like this car at all. I have tested other cars on the same tracks as I have this one and the other ones just feel better even with base setups.

      Till next time...zoom..zoom

  • iRacing US Summer Tour: New D iRacing US Summer Tour: New Dates Added!

    • From: Sean Siff
    • Description:

      Hello Fellow iRacers,

I am very pleased to announce our next three stops on the iRacing US Summer Tour.  In a matter of hours, our mobile marketing truck and trailer will leave for our first stop:  the Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.  We will be at the Historics for the entire weekend beginning on Friday morning, August 14th.  After the Monterey Historics, we will be traveling north to Infineon Raceway for the IRL and Indy Lights race the following weekend (Aug. 21-23).  Our third confirmed stop on the Summer leg of our tour includes the SCCA Runoffs beginning on Sept. 22nd and going through until Sept. 27th.  For those of you who live in the Las Vegas area, we *might* be going to SEMA this year; don’t hold me to it, but it is a trip we are considering.

Since I last posted an entry, we made two quick trips around the greater New England area with our mobile iRacing trailer.  Staffed solely by our iRacing marketing department, we traveled to Lime Rock Park for the July ALMS event.  Speaking for our entire department, we all really enjoyed meeting you, our current members, and creating a few new members as well.  From Lime Rock Park we drove through the night to Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine.  We try to visit every track in our simulator as our budget allows and we met a few very enthusiastic iRacing members who race with us from the most northern points in New England.

It has been a great summer so far, and I personally look forward to meeting more of you at our upcoming events.  Come look for me at the front of our trailer at the events listed above and please do introduce yourself!

      See you on the road.

  • Rookie Advice: Adopt a Track Rookie Advice: Adopt a Track

    • From: Raymond Bryden
    • Description:

I decided to put together a couple of paragraphs (well more than a couple Smile ) for rookies to get acquainted with road racing here in iRacing.

Disclaimer: I am not much past a rookie, myself, and have a lot to learn, but hopefully, the lessons I learned will help others to advance at a faster pace. But we'll see how much value there is...

Road Rookie Advice Blog - Volume 1

      Adopt a Track

When I came out of sim retirement a few short months ago and got over some hardware upgrade issues to be able to run iRacing, I was struck with how much I had to learn. Since I had spent a few years with GPL 8-10 years ago, I thought I had enough car control experience with the Papy model to be able to at least keep the car on the track for some slow laps until I got used to Laguna Seca and Lime Rock Park in the Solstice. How naive. Perhaps I was just rusty, or the model had changed radically over the past 10 years, or the Solstice was just too different than any of the GPL cars I'd driven. Whatever the reason, it took a long while to get accustomed to the tracks and the level of grip.

The good thing about the rookie program is that it limited you to two tracks, so as not to overwhelm you. Since I knew the layout of Laguna Seca from older sims, I grew accustomed to it much faster than Lime Rock as I knew the line and had a rough idea of the braking points. When the schedule flipped to Lime Rock I was immediately put off balance and felt unsure of myself, and relief would set in the following week when it would flip back to Laguna where - while slow - I could have a fighting chance of finishing the race without embarrassing myself.

After 'graduating' to a 4.0 safety rating and was able to race the Skip Barber car, I was again a little overwhelmed with the new tracks I had to learn, along with the feel of the car which seemed more comfortable going down the track ass-first. Thousands of half-spins later I managed to teach my feet to go easier on the pedals, and that paid off with much more fun and less frustration.

But I still struggled to keep up with learning each new track that came up and spent most of the week learning not to spin, and trying to be consistent, and finally getting brave enough for an end-of-week race. Late in my Rookie season, I decided to adopt a track.

We can all cite examples of world famous drivers, and local racing legends alike who are the driver to beat when the series lands at their home racetrack. A good example is former MotoGP champion, Nicky Hayden, who raced motorcycle events all across the US until making it up to MotoGP. When that series finally set up a race at Laguna Seca, he was automatically cited as the rider to beat, although he had struggled everywhere else until then. Sure enough, he ended up being the fastest guy there all weekend and walked away with the victory. The main reason was obviously that he had that track burned into his brain from all the racing he'd done there previously, and so when the other riders showed up without any track time there, he led the way.

The trouble is, for real life racers, they only have a limited number of tracks to study to that detail bacause of circumstances and geography. For us here in racing we don't have those constraints and can select any track on the system as our base.

I think this is a good strategy. Find a good track from your chosen series that has many different elements to learn from, and study it to death. I spent hours and hours at my chosen track (Lowes Road Course) until I had a good feel for it and could be competitive with people who were more advanced than myself. I had practiced it to death in the Skip, since that was the car I raced at that track, but when week 13 came around they raced Solstices at Lowes RC, which was a blessing and a curse. A blessing since I'd studied that track to the most minute detail, and a curse, because I knew it so well in the Skip but not at all in the Solstice.

However, I practiced and quickly learned how to adjust for the different handling of the car and sure enough I held of for a victory in a week 13 race when the leaders crashed out. A bitter-sweet victory, but my first as an online sim-racer! To celebrate, I immediately entered the next race, and the confidence boost helped me to attempt a couple of passes and I actually won again. This time, no fluke - and two in a row! I knew that it was an anomaly, and was not going to be a sign of things to come, but it showed the advantage of knowing the track well.

My skills have improved a lot over the past few months, and while I am still way slower than the aliens, and still fly off the track too much, I am improving on a daily basis. And I still see myself as one of the contenders when the schedule lands back at Lowes RC. I think that confidence boost when you land at your home track carries over to the next track as well. It may also be an advantage to race your home track earlier in the week when other drivers are still learning the track and thus you can augment your advantage.

Moreover, you can retire early for the week and get a head start learning the next track with some offline practice, which can again keep you competitive the following week and allow you to punch above your weight. As time goes on you can select a new home track and use that training to apply to another series, knowing that if you return to your first home your brain will be ready for each upcoming turn.

As for what track to select, it will be different for everyone, but I would recommend a place that is not a popular or over-used track (like Laguna and Lime Rock are since they are raced all the time in the Rookie series) since most other drivers will know those tracks well. I would also find a track that includes elements you would expect to find at many tracks (heaving braking turns, high-speed turns, twisty sections, off-camber turns, etc.) so that the time spent studying your home track can be applied to similar turns at other tracks.

      Good Luck!
